Ray Chatani is a Japanese-New Zealand bandleader, composer/arranger based in Kobe, Japan.

He attended the New Zealand School of Music before earning his masters degree in Jazz Arranging from William Paterson University of New Jersey, after which he immersed himself in the New York jazz scene.

His personal project is the Ray Chatani Orchestra, a 16 piece jazz orchestra that has performed at major jazz venues in Wellington (NZ), Kobe, Osaka and Nagoya (JP). The debut album ‘Ray Chatani Orchestra’ was recorded at Sanwa Studios Osaka and released in 2026 under the Brilliant Works label (BRWS-009).

The album was featured alongside an interview on Kansai Radio and Radio New Zealand Concert. Pieces from the album have been featured on Spotify’s ‘Modern Jazz Japan’ playlist, and performed live by university and high school big bands in the US and New Zealand.

He has also worked as a trombonist, highlights including an appearance on the CBS Sunday Morning TV show with Bret McKenzie, and at the Hakuba Snow Machine music festival with Hilltop Hoods as support performer.

As a freelance composer/arranger, his clients include Texas based musician and jazz club manager Doc Watkins, various artists and hobbyists. He also works an educator, serving as tutor for the online course Composer Forge, whilst also contributing to ebooks, jazz workshops, early childhood classes, and conducting private lessons.

茶谷レイは、ニュージーランドと日本にルーツを持つバンドリーダー、作曲家・アランジャー。神戸を拠点に活動している。

ニュージーランド音楽大学を卒業後、米国ニュージャージー州のウィリアム・パターソン大学でジャズアレンジの修士号を取得。その後、ニューヨークのジャズシーンに身を置く。

自身のプロジェクトである「茶谷レイ・オーケストラ」は、16人編成のビッグバンドであり、ウェリントン（NZ）、神戸、大阪、名古屋の主要なジャズクラブで演奏を行ってきた。デビューアルバム『Ray Chatani Orchestra』は大阪の三和スタジオで録音され、2026年にBrilliant Worksレーベル（BRWS-009）よりリリースされた。

アルバムは、ラジオ関西およびラジオ・ニュージーランドでのインタビューとともに取り上げられた。また、アルバム収録曲はSpotifyのプレイリスト「Modern Jazz Japan」に選出され、アメリカやニュージーランドの大学・高校のビッグバンドによってライブ演奏されている。

トロンボニストとしても活動しており、CBSテレビ『Sunday Morning』でのブレット・マッケンジーとの共演や、白馬SNOW MACHINEフェスティバルでのヒルトップ・フッズのサポートアクト出演などが挙げられる。

フリーランスの作編曲家として、テキサスを拠点に活動するミュージシャンでジャズ会場マネージャーのドック・ワトキンスをはじめ、各種アーティストやアマチュアバンドなどをクライアントに持つ。また、オンラインコース「Composer Forge」の講師を務めるほか、電子書籍、ワークショップ、幼児向け音楽クラスへの参加、マンツーマンの指導など、教育者としても活動している。
